The Presidency has maintained that no state has been authorized to procure automatic weapons for its security outfits.
A presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu reiterated that President Muhammadu Buhari has repeatedly made it clear that nobody is allowed to illegally carry AK-47 or any other automatic weapons.
He also added that where they fail to do so, the law enforcement agencies have been given clear directives to deal with any such outlaws.
The clarification was made against the backdrop of an accusation by the Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu that the federal government despite its opposition to the proposed use of arms by the Western Nigeria Security Network, Amotekun, allowed its equivalent in Katsina state to bear weapons.
The governor subsequently expressed his commitment to equipping Amotekun for the effective operation of the corps in securing the lives and property of the people of the region.
