The Broadcasting Organization of Nigeria (BON) and the Society of Nigerian Broadcasters (SNB) wish to express their deep condolences following the tragic loss of 35 children due to the unfortunate stampede during a recent philanthropic event organized by Queen Silekunola Naomey with the Support of some media stations in Oyo-state. In light of this incident, BON and SNB representatives visited the duo at Agodi Correctional Facility in Ibadan, where they are currently remanded pending further legal proceedings.
The delegation, led by Dr. Yemisi Bamgbose, Executive Secretary of BON, and Deacon Owolabi OLADEJO, the BON National Vice Chairman (South West) and SNB Oyo-state chairman Comrade Awodele Oluseun expressed solidarity with the organizers during this challenging time. The tragic outcome of the event has raised serious concerns regarding duty of care, negligence, and vicarious liability, urging all stakeholders to exercise caution in future philanthropic endeavors.
During the visit, it was emphasized that while the emotional response to such a catastrophic event is natural, it is crucial to approach the situation with compassion and rationality.
The delegation acknowledged the sorrow felt by the families affected by this tragedy and reiterated the importance of focusing on healing and justice.
“We must remember that the primary concern should be the bereaved families,” stated Dr. Bamgbose. “Their grief deserves our utmost respect and attention. We call on the Oyo State Governor to ensure adequate compensation for these families and to foster an environment that encourages philanthropy while addressing the systemic issues that lead to such humanitarian crises.”
The delegation also urged the public to refrain from dramatizing the situation online, emphasizing that genuine empathy and support for the affected families are more critical than any performative expressions of grief. The focus must remain on how we can collectively prevent such tragedies in the future.
As we navigate this profoundly unfortunate incident, our thoughts and prayers are with the families who lost their loved ones. We urge all involved to approach the ongoing proceedings with integrity and a commitment to justice.
